Studies on pattern regulation in hydra
نویسنده
چکیده
In a previous paper (Webster & Wolpert, 1966 a) it was shown that during regulation the time required for the determination of the dominant region, the hypostome, was dependent on the original position of the hypostome-forming region on the linear axis. Hypostome determination occurred more quickly from distal than from proximal regions, suggesting an axial gradient. As Spiegelman (1945) has pointed out, a gradient in time for determination is not sufficient for limited realization to occur in a regulative system (Webster & Wolpert, 1966a). In addition, some mechanism for suppressing potentialities is required. One of the characteristic features of a dominant region is that it inhibits the formation of a new dominant region (Huxley & de Beer, 1934), and earlier work on hydra (Rand, Bovard & Minnich, 1926) has presented some evidence for inhibition of distal regeneration by distal structures. This paper will be concerned with a detailed analysis of the factors controlling hypostome formation.

Induction of secondary axis in hydra revisited: New insights into pattern formation
In 1909, several years before the famous `Organizer’ experiments of Spemann and Mangold, Ethel Browne demonstrated induction of a secondary axis in hydra by grafting a hypostome. Based on this and subsequent work, in the late sixties, Lewis Wolpert proposed the theory of morphogen gradients and positional information. We have studied secondary axis induction by hypostome and foot tissue using t...

Receptor-based models with hysteresis for pattern formation in hydra.
In this paper, we propose a new receptor-based model for pattern formation and regulation in a fresh-water polyp, namely hydra. The model is defined in the form of a system of reaction-diffusion equations with zero-flux boundary conditions coupled with a system of ordinary differential equations. The production of diffusible biochemical molecules has a hysteretic dependence on the density of th...
متن کاملExpression of Cnox-2, a HOM/HOX homeobox gene in hydra, is correlated with axial pattern formation.
Cnox-2 is a HOM/HOX homeobox gene that we have identified in the simple metazoan Hydra vulgaris (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa). Cnox-2 is most closely related to anterior members of the Antennapedia gene complex from Drosophila, with the greatest similarity to Deformed. The Cnox-2 protein is expressed in the epithelial cells of adult hydra polyps in a region-specific pattern along the body axis, at a low...
